Measures Exoplanet TRAPPIST-1 B’s Temperature

NASA’s Webb Telescope

The planet's emission of thermal energy was detected by the MIRI of the Webb telescope.

TRAPPIST-1 b has a dayside temperature of around 500 kelvins, indicating a lack of substantial atmosphere.

This discovery is the first detection of light emitted by a small, cool exoplanet like those in our solar system.

The study highlights the potential of Webb's MIRI to characterize temperate, Earth-sized exoplanets.

The research was conducted as part of the Webb Guaranteed Time Observation program for TRAPPIST-1.

Additional observations of TRAPPIST-1 b during secondary eclipses are currently underway.
